Trusting relationships with our stakeholders
As a leading gas distributor, we are aware of being part of an ecosystem that contributes to Italy’s economic and social development.
We promote increasingly efficient connections between networks, geographic areas and communities which, also through the innovation drive, are able to create value shared among all the players.
We are committed to cultivating and maintaining, through specific activities, strong partnerships and dialogue with our stakeholders, which we recognise as central both to assessing our operations and our internal know-how, and to creating services in line with local and national growth plans.
For us, the geographic areas and local communities are the ideal place for consolidating the social usefulness of our business. Maintaining constant and active dialogue with the reference communities, at all levels, is fundamental to efficiently implementing our growth and sustainable development plans.
In particular, we pursue the commitment in geographic terms through fair cooperation and transparency with local institutions, with other energy sector operators and with the consumer associations, so as to best satisfy the needs and expectations of our service users. In addition, we actively participate in initiatives promoted by the trade associations, so as to intercept the claims and interests of the industrial chain and to construct a sound, qualified network of business with which to interact and share good practices.
At municipal administration level, we are active in the field of environmental protection and energy savings. In particular, in 2017 we presented a document to officials and local installers, along with certain members of the gas heat pumps industry, the trade association Climgas and leading Italian infrastructural gas operators, which promotes the use of natural gas.
One of our main goals is to continuously improve the service provided to end users, with whom we have direct and indirect relations, working alongside the sales companies. We therefore believe it is important to improve the tools and procedures made available to sales operators: for example, from April 2018 we renewed GasOnLine, one of the first applications for the exchange of information between gas distribution operators, simplifying access to the various functions and news on issues of common interest.
Among the different initiatives developed on behalf of customers, along with 14 of the major Consumer Associations, in 2017 we signed a memorandum of understanding to sensitise consumers to certain specific issues relating to the gas market.
We consider our human resources to be the highest-value asset of the company. This is why we look after our employees and encourage them to become the company’s voice and image in our operating areas, taking the vision and values of the group to customers and becoming the enablers of new innovation processes.
The most important means of communication is IGAS, the group intranet, inaugurated at the end of 2016, through which we are best able to internally disseminate all the key information, main items of news and corporate initiatives, as well as visual material such as photos and video clips to narrate experiences and events. Easy to use and accessible from every electronic device, the intranet helps us to route the most important messages and support the ongoing changes in the corporate culture [LINK ALLA PAGINA “LA CULTURA DI ITALGAS” NELLA SEZIONE “CARRIERE”], bringing out the most virtuous conduct and initiatives.
We consider full and prompt disclosure to the financial community, analysts and investors to be a strategic level in creating value. In fact, it is thanks to this constant dialogue that we are able to identify and satisfy the needs for awareness, transparency and trust, essential elements to establishing a bond of mutual enrichment.
Even if the greatest interest is in the financial performance and strategy of the group, the non-financial aspects, such as the corporate governance methods, environmental impact and reputational risk, are also disclosed and shared in the dialogue. Such information, in fact, can be added value for the financial community and our shareholders, an important percentage of which are SRI (Sustainable and Responsible Investment) investors, who base their investment decisions on ethics principles and on the analysis of non-financial variables. At the end of 2017, SRI investors and funds represented around 6% of the total shareholders and approximately 12% of Italgas’ institutional investors.
In 2017 we implemented a major engagement programme composed of numerous meetings and presentations with investors: from the Capital Market Day, focusing on strategies and objectives in view of the listing, to two roadshows in Europe and America and subsequent activities, we presented the group and the 2017-2023 Strategic Plan at around 120 one-to-one meetings, 50 group meetings and 7 sector conferences.
We interact continuously with our suppliers to be able to offer our customers an increasingly efficient service in terms of performance and of impact on the community. We are a highly integrated group with its own supply chain: cultivating relations based on transparency, impartiality and responsibility, we are committed to opening a path to mutual growth aimed at constant improvement of the supply activities.
The suppliers’ portal, the main means of communication with our commercial partners, allows us to reach our suppliers directly and immediately, to efficiently manage the processes, the provision of training and education on matters of corporate interest, the optimisation of daily operations with all parties involved in managing the entire supply chain
Relations with public institutions are fundamental to remaining constantly updated on legal and regulatory developments at national and European level and, consequently, to proper and efficient business operations and development. Given the highly complex sector, in addition to ensuring that good institutional relations are maintained, internally we cultivate specific expertise and, with regard to legislative monitoring, we also rely on qualified agencies in the sector that notify management of the most significant regulatory changes.
Our most important point of reference is the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA), responsible for regulating the entire natural gas distribution sector, calculating and updating the tariffs, providing rules for access to infrastructures and for distribution of the related services.
The relationship we have built with ARERA and, in more general terms, with all the national and international public institutions, is based on values such as transparency, fairness and professionalism (already included in our Code of Ethics) and on a willingness to cooperate and proactively contribute to building a clear, transparent and stable regulatory framework to encourage the sustainable development of the gas system.
It is in this spirit that we decided on voluntary inclusion in the European Commission’s Transparency Register, in the Ministry for Economic Development’s Transparency Register and in the Register of Interest Representatives kept by the Italian Chamber of Deputies.
