Sardinia Methanisation
Medea between technological innovation and renewable gases
The methanation project has brought significant energy and economic benefits to Sardinia.
Medea, a company of the Italgas Group, is active in the distribution of natural gas in Sardinia. Its presence covers 24 of the island’s 38 basins, including the main capitals such as Cagliari, Sassari, Nuoro and Oristano. The company operates a network of 2,700 kilometers and 98 cryogenic deposits of liquefied natural gas (LNG). By focusing on technological innovations and renewable gases for a more sustainable energy future, it has improved accessibility and quality of service.
The conversion to methane of Olbia and the expansion of the network and cryogenic deposits.
In December 2023, Medea successfully completed the conversion of Olbia’s city network from LPG to methane, serving 7,500 families. The transition to methane offers numerous benefits, including bill savings of up to 30% and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 10%. In addition, the replacement of old meters with state-of-the-art smart meters enables real-time consumption readings and more efficient service management.
Medea has planned the construction of 102 cryogenic LNG depots to ensure the continuity and flexibility of energy supply. The company is also developing “digital native” networks that will support the distribution of renewable gases such as biomethane, green hydrogen and synthetic methane, further promoting the decarbonisation of consumption.
Project phases
Sardinia has the most cutting-edge network in the country. The network, which extends for approximately 1,500 kilometers of intelligent networks, is already the most cutting-edge in the country today, both because it is already able to accommodate renewable gases such as biomethane and hydrogen, and because the supply is guaranteed only by gas supplies natural liquefied.
