Italgas for transition
Our business and sustainability strategies focus on significant investments to shape the gas industry of the future, supporting the ecological transition
We are a leader in gas distribution in Italy and Greece, and with the acquisition of 2i Rete Gas—set to be finalized in the first half of 2025—we will strengthen our position and create the leading European entity in this sector. Our infrastructure plays a central role in the ecological transition, driving the decarbonisation of the economy and consumption in line with the climate targets set by the European Union.
Our Industrial Plan for 2024-2030 outlines a major investment programme totaling €15.6 billion. This plan focuses on integrating 2i Rete Gas and advancing the development, digitisation, and repurposing of infrastructure in Italy and Greece, while continuing to strengthen our presence in the water sector and energy efficiency.
The expanded size of the Group, combined with our expertise in innovation and digitisation, will empower us to lead the ecological transition. Digital transformation is a crucial driver for decarbonising the gas sector and advancing renewable gases. We are building a smart, digital, and flexible network that can accommodate and manage biomethane, and, in the longer term, hydrogen and synthetic methane. This will enhance the flexibility and resilience of the entire energy system. Furthermore, the application of artificial intelligence across all the Group’s activities will accelerate this next phase of digital transformation.
In the context of a ‘Network Tech Company‘, we leverage our distinctive skills to advance the water sector, developing a smart, efficient, and intelligent network that guarantees high service quality for the communities we serve.
Our strategic plan aims to build a Group of approximately 6,500 people, with the goal of serving around 14.9 million gas distribution customers by 2030. This Group will have the capacity to deploy planning, investment, and value-creation capabilities in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The vision and strategic choices made in recent years put Italgas in a position to contribute significantly to the energy transition process thanks to digitised, flexible and intelligent networks capable of accommodating renewable gases that enable diversification of sources, decarbonisation of consumption and greater efficiency and economy

Gas in the Energy Transition
Gas remains a central energy carrier during the transition phase, ensuring the stability of the energy system while renewable sources, which are progressively integrated into the electrical grid, remain non-programmable. As the share of renewable energy increases, so does the need for flexibility and energy storage. In this context, gas networks play a strategic role in decarbonisation due to their wide reach and ability to provide flexibility to the system. Specifically:
- In the short term, gas networks will support the gradual phase-out of coal, lignite, and oil.
- In the medium to long term, they will facilitate the replacement of fossil gas with renewable gases such as biomethane, green hydrogen, and synthetic methane.
Gas in the energy transition
The strategic choices made by the Group in recent years have positioned us ahead of national and EU institutions in their approach to decarbonisation and the reduction of climate-changing gas emissions. Gas infrastructures, with their low carbon footprint, extensive coverage, and system flexibility, will play a crucial role in the decarbonisation process. In the short term, these infrastructures will support the phase-out of coal, lignite, and oil. In the medium to long term, they will enable the gradual replacement of fossil gas with renewable gases such as biomethane, green hydrogen, and synthetic methane.
The integration of the Strategic Plan and the Sustainable Value Creation Plan underscores our commitment to enhancing all facets of sustainability, from fighting climate change to generating value for stakeholders, including shareholders and local communities.

Italgas title for the future of the planet
We leverage the digital transformation of networks and processes to achieve the energy transition and decarbonisation.
Italgas in Europe
In the context of promoting the energy transition and collaboration between companies and institutions, in 2018 we were among the founding members of GD4S (Gas Distributors for Sustainability), the European association of major gas distribution companies:
- Distrigaz Sud Retele in Romania
- Enaon in Grecia
- Floene in Portogallo
- Gas Networks Ireland in Irlanda
- GRDF in Francia
- Nedgia in Spagna
- Enexis Groep, Alliander e Stedin Groep in Olanda
In addition to being the industry leaders in their respective countries, GD4S represents a total of around 35 million end consumers, corresponding to 35% of the EU gas market, and operates more than 480,000 kilometres of network.
GD4S (Gas Distributors for Sustainability)
GD4S is committed to contributing to the decarbonisation of the European energy system by 2050. It dialogues with national and European institutions to represent the commitment of distributors and the importance of the role of gas networks in promoting the transition to a low-carbon energy model, exploring the potential of biomethane and hydrogen.
