The Italgas Prize arrived at its XVIII Edition. In the different annual editions that have taken place since 1987 when it was first initiated, 50 European scientific researchers have been awarded the Prize, some of who then rose to worldwide fame.

The new three-year cycle, which started with the 2003 Edition, presented some new ideas. The object of the Prize was limited to the themes of energy and its relation to the environment. Participation, limited in the past to only researchers operating in the European Union, was opened up to all researchers, without any geographical limitations. The traditional Prizes for Scientific Research and its Promulgation were joined by two other Prizes: the Prize Projects for the Environment, reserved for  companies, local authorities and organisations that have carried out projects or promoted productive policies of results particularly relevant for the community in the field of Energy and the Environment; the Prize Debut in Research, reserved for graduates, authors of Research Doctorate theses in the field of Energy and the Environment.
