Italgas: computer classrooms for schools in Central Italy affected by the earthquake. Delivered in the Rieti area the first 190 computers

Cittaducale (Rieti), December 20, 2018 – The first computer room with 25 computers donated by Italgas is now available to the students of the Galilei Comprehensive Institute of Cittaducale. It is the result of Italgas’ commitment to support schools in the municipalities of central Italy affected by the earthquake just a few days after signing the agreement with the Government’s Extraordinary Commissioner for the earthquake in central Italy.

Today another 165 computers – of the 1,500 destined for the most affected territories in the Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche and Umbria regions – have been delivered to the Territorial School Office in Rieti, which will assign them to the institutes already identified for the creation of new computer classrooms.

The meeting with the students was attended by the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Government, Piero Farabollini and the Head of Institutional Relations and Regulatory Affairs of Italgas, Nunzio Ferrulli, as well as the Mayor of Cittaducale, Leonardo Ranalli, the Deputy Mayor of Cantalice, Claudio Baldini, and the manager of the Regional School Office of the Province of Rieti, Giovanni Lorenzini.

In the coming weeks Italgas and the structure of the Extraordinary Commissioner, in collaboration with the Regional School Offices and the mayors of the municipalities in the area, will identify the other schools that will receive personal computers.

“Donating computer classrooms is a concrete way, in line with the sensitivity and expectations of young people, to contribute to the return to normality which is made of memory as well as perspectives – says the Commissioner for Reconstruction Piero Farabollini – These PCs are not a drop in the ocean because they will not only bring the children of the earthquake areas back in contact with the world, but also to give adequate technological support to that knowledge without which one does not become great”.

For the Italgas Group, the activity is part of the wider framework of interventions that the company, in its bicentennial history, has always addressed to the territories and communities in which it operates. In fact, in the four regions affected by the initiative, Italgas has planned investments of over 120 million euros for the maintenance and safety of gas distribution networks.

“For those who have experienced the drama of an earthquake – commented Italgas CEO Paolo Gallo – the time factor is a determining factor. For this reason, just as we have always worked to mitigate the inconvenience caused by seismic tremors, this time too, with the delivery of these first 190 computers, we wanted to give a concrete follow-up to the commitment made. As a service company operating in and for the territory, we want to do our part to continue to contribute to the growth and social and cultural development of communities. Today we start from the Galilei Institute and we count on proceeding just as quickly for the schools of the other municipalities involved”.

Italgas: 1500 computers for schools in the regions of Central Italy affected by the earthquake

Rome, December 5, 2018 – Italgas signed today, during a press conference held at the Chamber of Deputies, an agreement with the Government’s Extraordinary Commissioner for the earthquake in Central Italy to donate 1,500 computers to secondary schools in the earthquake-stricken municipalities of Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche and Umbria,

At the signing of the deed between the Extraordinary Commissioner, Piero Farabollini, and the CEO of Italgas, Paolo Gallo, the Hon. Tullio Patassini, deputy from the Marche region, and the Deputy Vice President of ANCI, Hon. Roberto Pella.

In the coming weeks Italgas and the Commissarial structure, in collaboration with the mayors of the municipalities in the area, will identify the schools that will receive the personal computers.

The Italgas Group has always been close to the territory and, since the beginning of its industrial history, has contributed to the growth and social and cultural development of the communities in which it operates.

The initiative signed today is in fact the first step of a wider plan aimed at local realities that will start next year and will involve the municipalities in which the Group operates. Moreover, in the areas affected by the earthquake, in addition to what has already been done in previous years, Italgas plans to invest over 120 million euros in the maintenance and safety of gas distribution networks, especially with a view to preventing the consequences of earthquakes.

“The document signed today – commented Italgas CEO Paolo Gallo – is a testimony to the great attention we have always paid to the local communities in which we operate. In the municipalities affected by the earthquakes we have been working from the outset to contain the difficulties resulting from the seismic tremors. The work carried out in Ussita, Camerino and many other municipalities has allowed citizens to get gas back into their homes as quickly as possible, reducing inconvenience to a minimum. By donating these computers we will contribute to the creation of computer classrooms in the schools of those territories, thus offering a concrete tool to boys and girls who legitimately aspire to the right level of training without being forced to long transfers to attend the equipped schools of the neighboring regions”.

“The earthquake not only crumbles places but also identities,”stressed the Government’s Extraordinary Commissioner, Piero Farabollini. “To rebuild, therefore, is also to regenerate the sociality and prospects of our communities in the Apennines, which have been the cradle of civilisation and the civil and moral history of Italy. Through the Italgas donation, the synthesis between memory and the future is realized for thousands of young people and their families. It does so through the medium that connects par excellence and that we want to consider as a symbol of that network made up of technicians, administrators, politicians and companies that embody the will to do and do well so that the children who will be connected to the world with these tools will remain deeply connected to their mother earth”.

Portofino: the by-pass that reconnects the city to the gas distribution network is now in operation

Portofino, 24 November 2018 – As of today, the Portofino gas network is once again connected to the national gas transportation and distribution system. This is thanks to the realization of a temporary by-pass that will allow to exclude the section of the network between Punta della Cervara and Punta Bagno delle Donne, damaged by the bad weather of the past weeks, and will guarantee the supply of the distribution network until the realization of a new pipeline laid on a different route.

The temporary by-pass, made of polyethylene, extends for about 1,100 meters and starts from Cervara and reaches the parking area of Paraggi passing along a path through the woods.

Until the commissioning of the aforementioned by-pass, Italgas has in any case guaranteed continuity of service to residents through the use of so-called “cylinder-packs”, special methane containers at a pressure of about 200 bar, transported by sea.

In parallel with the construction of the temporary by-pass, Italgas has started the authorization process for the laying of a new gas pipeline along a roadway that is more internal than the previous one at Punta della Cervara damaged by the sea storm. Its construction, which will require several months of work, will allow the restoration of a definitive connection of Portofino to the national natural gas transmission and distribution network.

Italgas: the Italian Prime Minister visits the Milan headquarters and the Digital Factory

Milan, 14 October 2018 – The Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, has visited today the Italgas headquarters in Milan together with the Company’s Chief Executive Officer, Paolo Gallo.

The meeting was also attended by the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, the State Under Secretary for Regional Affairs, Stefano Buffagni, and the Chairman of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, Massimo Tononi. The visit was an opportunity to illustrate to the Prime Minister the characteristics of gas distribution sector, its development perspectives, the challenges of innovation and the strategies of Italgas.

Paolo Gallo has retraced the main pillars of Italgas 2018-2024 Strategic Plan, which provides for investments of 5.6 billion euros; a plan that has among its main targets the consolidation of the sector, in which today there are more than 200 operators, mostly small and very small, which will see Italgas as a leading actor

In addition, the other major challenge of the Strategic Plan is the technological innovation to which Italgas has allocated 800 million euros for the digitization of the network and processes; a project that will produce major improvements in terms of infrastructure management, efficiency and quality of service.

The Prime Minister has visited the new spaces dedicated to technological innovation (“Digital Factory”) where multifunctional teams will develop new IT solutions in Agile and Time-Boxed mode aimed at transforming business processes. This new workplace will involve Italgas staff and will give hospitality and opportunities to the ecosystem of small and medium-sized companies that want to develop, with the support of the company, highly innovative technologies and tools. Italgas confirms its position as a leading company in the European scenario of gas distributors and as a reference model also in the field of innovation.

«In the last two years – said Paolo Gallo – Italgas is going through an extraordinary change: since its return to the Stock Exchange it has been able to initiate major organizational, technological and cultural transformations. We are investing in people and innovation and today’s visit by the Prime Minister is not only an honour, but for me and the 4,000 people of Italgas it is also a significant demonstration of trust and a confirmation of the merit of the work we are carrying out».

CEOs of EU leading gas distributors met Violeta Bulc, Commissioner in charge of Transports

Brussels, June 21st 2018 – Edouard Sauvage, CEO of GRDF (France), Dan Pantilie, CEO of Distrigaz Sud Retele (Romania), Gabriel Sousa, CEO of Galp Gás Natural Distribuição (Portugal), Nuria Rodriguez Peinado, CEO of Nedgia (Spain), Antoni Peris, Managing Director of Regulated Business of Gas Natural (Spain) and Paolo Gallo, CEO of Italgas (Italy) met today Violeta Bulc to present the benefits of natural and renewable gas for the decarbonisation of transport in Europe.

One day after a workshop organized by the GD4S coalition on the contribution from natural and renewable gas for the decarbonization of transports, CEOs seized this opportunity to present to Commissioner Violeta Bulc success stories of local authorities which choose gas solutions for their urban mobility. Gas solutions are already available all over Europe and represent a credible solution to decarbonize transports.

They urge the Commissioner to unleash the potential of natural and renewable gas to accelerate transport decarbonization and allow the EU to reach its climate targets. They present key requests:

  • The application in all policies of a technology neutrality approach to ensure an effective decarbonization of the transport sector: the whole fuel supply chain should be taken into account and all technologies should be treated on equal foot to ensure a more realistic comparison of the environmental impacts of the different fuels
  • The development of a well-to-wheel approach instead of a tailpipe emissions approach for the heavy-duty vehicles segment: it is fundamental to consider the entire fuel and vehicle supply chain – not to mention battery production and disposal – to address the full benefits of renewable fuels such as biomethane
  • A consistent approach between Energy and Mobility European legislations for the light-duty vehicles segment: ensuring a real consistency between clean mobility legislations and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive (Dafi) will strengthen the current framework and allow investments

The GD4S coalition believes in the potential of renewable gas as a credible solution for the future of clean mobility in the EU. Achieving the European climate targets for transport sector will not require a single solution but a pool of different and efficient tools which could integrate, e-mobility and gas solutions.

The Gas Distributors for Sustainability (GD4S coalition), brings together the five largest gas distribution system operators (DSOs) in France, Italy, Spain, Romania and Portugal. Together we have 86% of gas vehicles in the EU and our companies represent 25 million customers in Europe. Together, we are committed to participate in the EU clean energy and clean mobility and we aim at raising awareness on the potential of natural gas and biogas.

Italgas turns to Microsoft Cloud Computing for digitalizing networks and processes.

Milan, March 28, 2018Italgas, Italy’s leading company in the natural gas distribution sector and Europe’s third largest operator, officially announces its collaboration with Microsoft on a digital transformation project focused on Cloud Computing. As part of the 2017-2023 Industrial Plan, Italgas has, in fact, developed an innovation program that is unique in the gas sector and focuses on digitalizing assets and processes, on Industrial IoT and on dematerialization and automation.

At the heart of this plan is the cloud strategy and the decision to migrate the data center onto Microsoft Azure, as well as adopting the Office 365 productivity platform. The ambitious plan, now in its start-up phase, will be completed by August 2018, with the aim of managing the entire Italgas system in accordance with innovative criteria designed for achieving the highest levels of efficiency and flexibility.

Together with its subsidiaries, Italgas employs more than 4000 people, manages a network of around 66,000 Km – 7.5 million users served in 1600 municipalities – and has decided to turn to the public Cloud, preparing a new Infrastructure as a Service, migrating its previously on-premises applications and IT assets and setting up a new cloud-connected network. The reason for choosing Microsoft Azure is also because of its widespread availability – 140 countries and 17 languages – and the $14 billion investment that Microsoft dedicates to its global data center infrastructure to make it consistently reliable and state-of-the-art.

Microsoft’s public cloud platform offers massive computational and storage capacity that is suitable for managing the needs of a complex network and for supporting the company in a path of flexible growth, responding in a scalable way to the foreseeable peaks in demand associated with tendering for services assignment and optimizing IT costs. All of this comes with an assurance of security in terms of business continuity, a strategic element in a crucial sector such as that of energy, but also from the point of view of privacy, in line with the new European General Data Protection Regulation. Azure’s interoperability moreover ensures compatibility with the heterogeneous IT environment within Italgas, safeguarding previous investments in a logic of sustainable innovation. Azure was also chosen because of its capacity to support the company’s technological evolution, enabling the development of innovative solutions in the areas of Analytics, IoT and Big Data. In the long term, once the migration process is complete, Italgas could infact benefit from the functionality of remote monitoring and predictive maintenance and will, overall, be capable of further improving the quality of its service thanks to a more effective use of its data heritage.

Again, to increase efficiency and achieve operational excellence, another key element of Italgas digital transformation is the adoption of the cloud productivity platform Office 365, that will involve over 3,000 users by August. An opportunity to empower people and introduce a new way of collaborating keeping with the times. In a sector where working outside the office is common, Office 365 will make it possible to access data and applications securely, anywhere and at any time, contributing, with a greater empowerment of all the organization’s members, on the company’s journey towards growth.

Moving all our applications to the Cloudsays Francesca Vergara Caffarelli, CIO of Italgasis a key step in the digitization process that we are undertaking. In addition to the immediate benefits of increasing efficiency and reliability, it allows us to have access to all of Microsoft’s new technologies, both now and in the future, and to create the technological base required for transforming the corporate processes through the use of innovative technologies”.

We are proud to be working with a company like Italgas: innovation is an important component of the company’s strategic plan and we are certain that, thanks to the networks and processes’ digitization through the cloud, Italgas will be able to increase its efficiency and competitiveness. We hope that such an advanced digital transformation project in the world of Oil&Gas will inspire other companies, contributing to the socio-economic development of the country. Cloud computing can naturally make a difference in this way, by optimizing the processes, allowing flexible management of networks, facilitating the safe exchange of data and enabling new forms of collaboration and productivity. Opting for the Cloud means looking to the future and being ready to seize the new prospects associated with the Industrial IoT and Artificial Intelligence, says Vincenzo Esposito, Head of Enterprise Commercial Division, Microsoft Italy.

Italgas focuses on sustainable mobility and renews the entire company fleet with methane cars by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles

Turin, 18 December 2017 – Today, with the delivery in Turin of the first cars, the company’s entire Italgas fleet is being renovated with methane powered vehicles by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. In the next few days similar deliveries will be made in Rome and Naples, two of the main cities where the Italgas Group operates.

For Italgas – the most important operator in Italy in the natural gas distribution and the third largest in Europe – this is an important step along a virtuous path that will lead to a considerable reduction in harmful emissions into the atmosphere, contributing to making the air in the cities where it operates more breathable.

A sinistra Paolo Gallo CEO Italgas, a destra Alfredo Altavilla COO FCA EMEA (1)

The delivery of the cars took place at the historic Italgas area of Corso Regina Margherita in Turin. On the occasion, Alfredo Altavilla (Chief Operating Officer for the EMEA area of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and Giacomo Carelli (CEO of FCA Bank and Leasys) have symbolically handed over the keys to Paolo Gallo (CEO di Italgas) and Paolo Bacchetta (CEO of Italgas Reti).

The conversion of the company’s fleet into methane gas – the first in Italy to be completely methane – is one of the initiatives launched under the Italgas 2017-2023 Industrial Plan, which also included the construction of over 120 self-consumption gas filling stations within the 40 suitable technical areas.

Currently, the Italgas Group’s fleet is composed by 2,500 vehicles and over the next 12 months will be replaced with the latest “natural power” models of FCA: Panda, Panda Van, Fiorino, 500L, Doblò, Qubo and Ducato, all of them naturally fuelled by methane, in line with Italgas’ demands that considers the key of its development to be sustainable and efficient.

Today, methane for transportation is an intelligent and environmentally sustainable choice. It is an ecological, safe, practical and economical fuel. Its use reduces by up to 43% (mixed with biomethane, in the well to wheel optics) CO2 emissions and by 94-95% those of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and PM particulates.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ commitment to natural gas dates back to the nineties of the last century: an Italian technology, which FCA has created and grown, among the first manufacturers to believe and invest in the development of this type of power supply. Today it is among the leaders in the European market, with about 45 percent share, more than 740 thousand cars and commercial vehicles sold since 1997 and Panda, the most popular methane car ever, with more than 300 thousand vehicles sold.

Leasys confirms its role as a leader in the management of corporate fleets and in the rental sector during this partnership with Italgas. In fact, the FCA Bank company responds to the needs of every type of customer (with different characteristics and needs) with flexible and innovative solutions and offers. For example, formulas that reward the shift from ownership to use of the vehicle and that allow for positive spill-over effects in terms of congestion, improvement of the environment and reduction of vehicle costs.
